Stolen
2016
Public staged reading scheduled at LaMama, New York City April 2, 2017
From the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center: ". . . our readers expressed great admiration for STOLEN. Thank you for sharing such quality work with us."
Based on a true story, the stage play STOLEN looks at the crux of Cornelius Gurlitt’s last days in Munich after his secret possession of some 1,400 works of Nazi-era art––valued at more than a billion dollars––falls under global scrutiny. For nearly sixty years Cornelius hid the stash of twentieth century masterpieces, slyly amassed––and many likely stolen from escaping Jews––by his father, a “degenerate” art collector for Hitler. In Cornelius’ reclusive world and fragile mind, the pieces are his living and entire “family.” A chance chain of tragic and explosive events forces the octogenarian to face what he fears most. Can the weak hermit stand before an accusing world and save his family? What happens when the paintings come alive again?
